Setting out to push the boundaries of what Scotch Whisky could be, Johnnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker and Japanese chef Kei Kobayashi have encapsulated the enigmatic taste of umami. Only one in 25,000 casks succeed in bringing this limited edition blend to life.
“Umami possesses a mysterious quality that ignites our senses, revealing sumptuous taste and complexity. The final liquid is a multi-faceted expression of what I interpret Umami to be.” KEI KOBAYASHI

Baked almond desserts liberally splashed with cream, light caramel, malted milk, and an invading cloud of smoke from newly ignited twigs: a lucky strike from a forest survivalist. On the palate, it is soft and blushing, with marmalade and warm butter, ground ginger, moving to chocolate orange, toffee, and Ovaltine. A whirl of spices and chunky chocolate round off this blend’s finish stylishly. This has all the hallmarks of a perfect nightcap.

The assured Scotch whisky that became one of the classic blends. Dry and sweet, with a nose of vanilla sponge, fresh cut flowers, and marzipan over a malty base. Pleasingly oily, with flavors of burning butter, malty toffee, and cake mix, with gentle spices and hints of chocolate appearing the longer you hold off swallowing. The glossy mouthfeel makes this feel like an everyday luxury. A finish of spent spices, cocoa, hazelnut, and a waft of smoke brings it home.

Amber and bright in the glass, this 18-year-old blended whisky melds vanilla, cigar wrapper and chamomile tea notes with nutmeg and cinnamon spice, plus a delicate puff of sweet smoke. Feels light and silky, finishes long and gently.

A whisky commemorating the end of an era in Whisky history - the enactment of the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009. After the 22nd of November 2011 whiskies can no longer be labelled as Vatted Malts, the new term being the (debatably) confusing Blended Malt Whisky. This bottling, a cask strength vatting of 35 year old Speyside whisky and 26 year old Islay whisky, is Compass Box's tribute.
